GENRE1

This class is ONLINE.

In a genre study, readers delve into the exploration of fiction & nonfiction texts through an inquiry approach. Then they use the information and understandings gained through their inquiry to write their own effective, compelling pieces of narrative, expository, and persuasive texts. Genre Study increases the rigor in literacy instruction for ALL students by engaging them in the reading & writing processes through a workshop approach designed just for them.

This two-day professional learning will be provided through an engaging LIVE webinar format. You will work directly with the instructor. Participants will engage in an actual genre study of memoir. The instructor will model lessons and give participants time to practice, debrief, and reflect. It is essential that each participant collects a set of memoir texts prior to the first session. A list of recommendations is listed below.

Required Materials:

  • Genre Study: Teaching Fiction & Non-Fiction Books by Fountas & Pinnell
  • Ten to fifteen examples of memoir text (If possible, collect memoirs that are most like what your students would be reading on their own or you would be reading to them.)
  • Writer’s Notebook (a simple composition notebook will do)
  • Sticky notes

Though not required, it is highly recommended that you use a head set for the webinar.

If you have ever wondered how do I create a community of readers that are thoughtfully engaged in reading independently while I work with small groups or one-on-one with other readers, the answers are in this session! Participants will engage in and learn how to use five evidence-based literacy practices that lead to high levels of engagement and motivation, immediate feedback for teachers, authentic, thought-filled conversation about texts, multiple ways to respond to reading through writing, and a more empathetic, joyful community. (Teachers using Fountas & Pinnell Classroom Materials will learn how to use those materials effectively. However, it is not a requirement.)
